It is not a 'dogmatic' approach. I always use PDSUII to look at the AC ripple at maximum current draw. I believe vintage equipment designers used the minimum acceptable capacitance, but I think a limit of 2.5 volts AC ripple is acceptable. Many produce higher AC ripple.
