RE: Vintage vs New Amplification

Actually there was a big difference between 1974 and the early 80's.The development of new materials (during that time) lead to cheaper designs. Especially cheaper power supplies and construction methods. I need not discuss the effects of a cheap PS. However, a lot of that was balanced out by "better sounding" audio path components.

This was mainly due to those once great companies being flipped around like playing cards. Sell Marantz to some conglomerate and the next thing you know, a bunch of Warton graduates that know noting about audio are making decisions. I'll use Thiel speakers as one modern day example.

The only thing I will mention about parts is you have to know what part works best in what position. Throwing $50 capacitors all over the place will NOT guarantee good sound. It's all in the design AND implementation of choosing the right parts in that design.

As for that warm fuzzy vintage sound, that's nothing more than warn out parts and circuits drifting out of spec. I'm a vintage and tube guy to the end. My ONLY beef with modern vs vintage is that they seem to be trying SO hard to "improve things" that they are losing site of sound quality. Yeah, my stereo now has 0.0000001% distortion, but it sounds like a dental drill.

In closing I don't know if rebuilding an entire stereo and replacing every part in the audio path will bring you nirvana??? You have to remember a lot of those older stereos were designed and built with someone actually LISTENING!!!!!!!!!!!!! to the damn thing.

I've been farting around in audio for over 35 years. My final few keeper pieces to the end are a circa 1959 Sherwood S-5000 EL84 integrated (use the amp section) and a 1974 professionally rebuilt Marantz 250M. However I am NOT a fan of vintage preamps and speakers. I have a few new pieces that look wonderful sitting on the shelf unplugged.
