But you have AR 2AXs which are a 3 way with 3 1/2 " mid and 3/4" dome tweeter. He has aAR2s with double 5" tweeters. Your speakers are very different in the upper frequencies.

However your correct about the potentiometers. The middle setting on all early ARs was always a setting below the woofer level(and on 3 ways the middle tweeter setting was even lower). So the response was rolled off above the crossover point.
