Lucky lad that I am

In these cases, we can make a judgement about the playback system, but such recordings are few and far between, and mostly consist of small ensembles or soloists, certainly not large orchestral works recorded in large spaces.

I participated (in a minor way) in the two day recording process of this album:



Between takes, we would go downstairs where a small Studer mixing console feeding Dr. Stockham's Soundstream recorder were located. Shaw would listen and critique parts with certain of the musicians using Threshold electronics and ADS speakers. Shaw kept a small towel with him as the AC was turned off during the process.

I remember his discussion with the clarinetist who performed the solo in the Borodin piece. It took a couple of takes to satisfy him. :)
