Good piece, and it's missing just one tidbit: in the vast majority of studios, old gear is what drives them. Mics from the 60's or earlier (U-47, KM56, 414, 441, 421, U-67, U-87, SM57, C12 & C24); old hopefully recapped consoles from Neve, MCI, EMI, Trident; compressors from Urei, Teletronix, dbx,, and Gates; the ubiquitous Pultec EQ.
And... all studios with this old gear take advantage of the latest and greatest, like the stunning Avalon mic preamps, Lawson mics, and amazing converters.
They also go for new gear that is based on classic designs but takes advantage of components not available then, like the Manley compressors.
So, the old includes the new, and the new includes the old. It's all good.
