I believe this product was a collaboration between Cello (Mark Levinson) and AR, that never got "off the ground". If I'm right (I can't see the label markings to read the frequency bands) then it was an adaptation of the Cello Palette Preamp, which was itself an adaptation of the Cello Palette. Dick Burwen designed the original concept for the Palette using op amps. Cello's Tom Coelangelo then came up with the actual product using discrete devices which Cello released around 1985. The Palette Preamp was an attempt to get the price down from $15K to $8K (by using the best IC's available instead of discrete parts) without sacrificing sound quality. It was released in the late 80's.
I don't believe the AR product (or an accompanying amp and speaker) ever went into production - the unit in the picture may be just an empty box. Both Palette's come on the market from time to time, with the Preamp going for 3 to 4 $K. I have a DIY version of the Preamp (made from the actual boards found in a warehouse of Cello remains) but with the EQ portion separated from the preamp so I can adjust the EQ from my listening chair) and couldn't live without it.
