Classic gear from yesteryear; vintage audio standing the test of time.

My vintage gear- 1958 to 1965- has almost all original tubes

becketma,

Those stating that tubes in vintage gear last almost forever has been my experience too. I have a number of pieces of gear from 1958- Scott 330 mono tube tuner to the early- mid 60's McIntosh MX110, MR67, MC240, and Fisher 800 receiver and almost all the small signal tubes are originals. I did purposely changed all the tubes in the MR67, but except for the 12AU7 in the MPX decoder they were all original. Even my 1985 Audio Research SP8 has all it's original tubes- 5- Siemens ECC83/ 12AX7s, and ARC has the reputation for putting more stress on the tubes in their designs.

When the old production 12AX7s began to rise dramatically in price, I probably overbought. I use 28- 12AX7s in the various gear and bought 80+. Given the length of time these last, and my the use distributed among all the gear, this supply should last me about 150 years!

In my view, a reasonable strategy would be to buy two replacement sets for the most used gear and one for the rarely used- after determining the sound you like the best.

[ My favourite 12AX7's for vintage are: Siemens triple mica E83CC, the ordinary Philips/ Amperex/ Valvo / Mullards from the early to late 60's, and for 5751, the Sylvania triple mica, black plate, square getter.]

Cheers,

Bambi B
