The best way to listen to mono records, 78's and LP's, is a dedicated mono system, with a true mono cartridge (not a strapped stereo cartridge,) variable EQ, and one speaker. Till you've heard such a system, you haven't really heard everything those records are capable of. The playback will be quieter, as vertical modulation is completely ignored, and a single speaker is more phase coherent than a pair, resulting in more depth and focus. Also, if you've voiced your speakers for stereo, then only using one will affect bass balance, theoretically by 3db. I am constructing such a system now, fed from a second tonearm, sharing only the motor unit with the stereo system. It is also best to have many different sizes of needle (stylus, if you're a little anal,) at least 1mil. and 3mil,, optionally 2.5/3.5/4mil. General Electric variable reluctance pickups can still be found, and new needles for them are still being made. Ortofon and EMT make new mono cartriges, but they will be more expensive.
