A tale of a Scott 330D and McIntosh MR67

Scott 330D, 1958 mono- setup for AM-FM simulated stereo braodcasts

Mr bill2,

I've never heard the Scott 310E tuner, but by reputation it's fantastic sounding- and should be as they are often $1000-1300 these days- as much or more than McIntosh MR71's.

In 2005 I decided to get "settled" with tuners and bought a McIntosh MR67 (1974), MR77 (ss.s 1974)and a Revox B160 (ss.1989). I already had a Scott 330D (mono, 1958) and had been using a McIntosh MX110 as my tuner for years.

It's difficult to compare the mono Scott to the Stereo MR67 in some ways- and of course my Scott is not the same as the 310E, but I have to say the MR67 makes the best FM sounds I've heard from a tuner- articulate, amazing soundstage that's wider than the speakers and deep, deep, deep. By the way, I find the MR67 to have a more refined sound- less grain and more transparent- than the MR71. The Scott has it's great points too- I like the Scott mono FM- clear and quiet- so much I've thought a about a tube mono system: Dual 1019 / Scott 330D > EICO HF14 > some Wharfdale, Klispch or AR3.

Sorry, this is more reminiscing than help since I don't know the 310E. However, I think an MR67 in good nick would be a joy forever- it's amazing! I'm keeping mine- but then I keep about everything I've ever bought anyway!

Cheers,

Bambi B
