The 9 inch woofer in the Smaller Advent (SA) is a unique mass-loaded bass driver. Although they are admittedly nasty looking, the dust cap of each woofer was hand treated at the factory with the right amount of additional putty-like material needed to properly load the woofer and dampen resonances. It is this mass loading, along with the special voice coil of the SA, that enables this driver to provide exceptional lower bass response that extends down to 33hz (-5db) when installed in the original cabinet. The trade off is one of efficiency. The Smaller Advent is 3~4db less sensitive than the original Advent speaker. That puts the sensitivity of the Smaller Advent at somewhere around 83db/1watt @1 meter. Knowing this, the designers chose to make the SA a 4 ohm design as many of the solid state amplifier designs of the same period were capable of a bit more, if not 2x more, power into an 4 ohm speaker load than an 8 ohm load. In effect, the Smaller Advent coaxes more power from an amplifier than it would otherwise deliver and this negates, at least to some extent, the lower sensitivity of the speaker. A small speaker approximately the same size as the SA is the AR 4x. It is an 8 ohm acoustic suspension design. The bass does not extend quite as deep as on the SA, but it does extend down to below 50 Hz with audible bass.
