Classic gear from yesteryear; vintage audio standing the test of time.

Hey Rodney..

No worries -- I asked for your opinion on something specific and you gave me an idea of your prefs. And I appreciate your comments. Believe me -- there is something just not right with my rig. I am just trying to troubleshoot. My first moves are just to see what diff. speaks and some different preamplification sound like.

You make a good point with the preamp comments -- could i just be assuming that my tubed pre is warm sounding.. when in fact, with holcos and 716s its overall signature is on the revealing side? It also has (4) tele 12ax7 ribbed plates in it -- does it seem to have the wrong innards to get on well with the 6L6 Citation?

Maybe I'm just hearing a lot of poor recordings revealed.. hmmmm??

My main objective is simply a system that sounds natural, kinda free & easy and in the better cases.. i forget that the equipment is there. I can absolutely say that right now, i'm hearing some decent machinery just not mesh right and i can't help but be annoyed at what i perceive to be sound that 1) sounds like it is coming from two different boxes, albeit at the same time (rarely do i get a nice center image), 2) instruments that sound too separate, often out of place. My smallish listening area may be a big contributor to the problem. While it's maybe 20 x 12" -- i don't give the Ars a lot of room to work with -- maybe they need more air out in front.

Either way.. the least time and potentially financially consuming next steps to try seem like to bring home some demo gear and make some notes on the differences i am hearing. Guess it's just part of the process - think it could be a bit fun too.

I'll try to grab a buddy and have fun with it. Amazing how valuable it would be to have a few of you guys over with a pizza and a few beers and we all just analize the s**t out of each others systems -- i'm sure i'd save a lot of time and money.. You guys would need all of two minutes to let me know the obvious problems.

I truly appreciate your interest man.. and will gladly post how the old experiments work out.

cheers, marc
