I see you started to experiment. I hope my advice was not too focussed on the amp. I think new speakers could be a way to go. However, I did not realize that was in your budget. Given the attributes of the Cit V, I would think you would want a rather tight speaker. The Vandy's may be the ticket, but I would use the 4ohm tap. Another idea would be to sweeten up your preamp with some oil or wax caps. I may have a few that I could send your way (I just found a box of caps, some NOS, some used). It would be a cheap experiment, and if you liked the results, you could buy some fancy new caps.
