Vintage Wharfedale Speakers - Rebuild? Total newbie in this area.

I have a pair of Wharfedale W60 (E's? D's?); big three ways. They are in excellent cosmetic condition but sound only 'pretty good'. I know ay least one of the L pads(? - the two adjustment knobs on the back of the cabinet to tune the high and low) doesn't work. Drivers are in good condition.

I need a pair of very efficient speakers for the small SET amps I plan to build. I'm considering gutting out the Wharfedales and replacing the drivers with a simple and high efficiency two way design or even a single driver design. I know that matching the drivers to the cabinet is tricky stuff but building new cabinets isn't likley to happen for (not many tools, little time, even less knowledge). What I'm interested in is learning how I might go about using the Wharfedale cabinets for my project. I suspect it isn't just 'plug and play' with drivers that fit the holes.

Any starting points appreciated!
