Re: Wharfedale Speaker Identification, please help.

Dear Owen,

What is portrayed in the photograph looks like what was known as the Wharfedale Rosedale. It used to be the top-of-the-line speaker from Wharfedale somewhat around 1972 - 1973, with a price tag (in Europe) the 300 USD range: kindly note that I am saying 1972-1973, and that was quite a lot of money in those times.

I have owned a pair of them purchased secondhand somewhere in 1983- 1984. What strikes me most is that, even after so many years, the woofers do not appear to suffer from any de-foaming. Even though having to admit that they are unable to stand a one-to-one comparison with some of the big Maggies or the Yamaha FX3 (a totally elusive No.1 hardly known to the public) I have to admit they do sound great. One thing you may hacve to take into account is that they were rated a very strange nominal impedance value of 6 (six) ohms: this may require different adaptations depending on the poweramp you hook them on. I used them for a long time im my country house with a Mc C26 - Mc 2505 pair and with the 2505 4 ohms were the better choice. I recently switched to an Audio Research LS7 - VT 70 pair and here 8 ohms sound (to my ears at least) slightly preferable. Kindly also note that these speakers do generate a -- very solid -- bass (I used them to monitor during the weekend a live act where I was on bass, and I found the rendition pretty convincing - wrong notes included) so a good insulation both with respect to the floor and to the rest of the rig is mandatory.

Hope the foregoing may help.

Luciano
