Here’s my 2 cents worth:•First good speakers are good with good gear regardless of when then it was made. Great speakers with great gear are even better.
•Second, lots of vintage gear is in the good category and some is in the great category (and a lot is in the terrible category but that’s another post). And since this is the vintage section of AA most everyone on this forum would agree that some of the best vintage gear compares favorability with today’s high end stuff.
•Third spending $700 for a pair of modern speakers does not get you in the “high end†league. $700 may be able to get you some speakers that you really like, but some people would contend that spending ten times that much would not get you to the into “high endâ€.
•Fourth, I don’t think that all high end speakers sound all that good. Frankly I’ve heard $35,000 speakers that don’t sound as good to me as a pair of $250 Advents. So I’m not a big believer in a positive correlation between price and sound quality. But on the other hand I have heard some wonderful speakers that cost more than my first house.
So my advice is to not worry about the age of the speakers you buy. Listen to them, if you like them get them and if you don’t like them don’t get them. And remember if a new speaker is a "good" someday it will be a good vintage speaker.
