Vintage receivers with "hi-end" speakers?

I've been through more "hi-end" gear then I care to remember. Never being satisfied, I've gotten to the point where I just don't want it any more. Too much obsessing about the gear, not enough enjoyment listening to music. I've gone vintage. In my bedroom, I have a Pioneer SX-636 that's so clean, it look's like I just brought it home from the showroom. In the basement, a Pioneer SX-838, almost as clean as the 636. Both of these receivers pick up radio stations like there right next door, and manage to sound good doing it. My other change has been to quit buying commercial speakers and build my own from kits. I have built the Parts Express BR-1 kit [great value for the money] the Madisound Cygnet II [just a great speaker, period] the Madisound Vifa Big A/V [ok, but if your looking, go for the Cygnet] and now, I'm in the process of building a pair of Shamrock SE-1 speakers. I'm concerned that the Shamrock, being a more refined speaker than the others, might be a little much for the vintage Pioneers. I'm having the cabinets professionaly made [mahogany!] and when I'm done, will have close the $700 wraped up in these speakers. I guess I'm just asking if anyone here has used very high quality speakers with vintage receivers with good results? I'm starting to think maybe the money would have been better spent on a nice Dual CS5000 turntable and a couple hundred records. Are very refined speakers a mistake with vintage gear?
