The 'free air resonance' (FAR) is the frequency at which the cone mass and suspension/spider stiffness resonate, with the driver in open or 'free' air - completely unenclosed. When the driver is mounted in a closed box (infinite baffle) type of enclosure, the front and back waves do not cancel out (as in open air) and bass extends much lower. However, the enclosed air adds stiffness to that of the surround/spider, producing a resonant frequency that is somewhat higher than the drivers FAR. Bass response declines below this 'system resonant frequency'. All else being equal, the lower the FAR, the lower the system resonant frequency and the deeper the bass response. A lower FAR generally correlates with deeper bass response in other more complex enclosure types as well (provided that 'other' driver parameters are optimized).
Hope this is helpful,

Bob
