RE: Vintage find VERY close to home

Dave,

Indeed I do. I had one of these back in the good old days. First as a midrange in a huge AbleWood cabinet with the Wharfedale 15" woofer and an AR-ST "range extender". Later moved the 8" to a dual chambered design with three ports which got down to a solid 40 Hz. The dual chambered cabinet was somewhat larger than an AR-3 or Advent.

The suggestion for two of those in an MTM design is a really good one. Crossover to a tweeter up around 3 kHz. You could use any good 1" dome with only a single capacitor and a single inductor for a crossover. The Super 8's are really smooth and clear sounding. G. A. Briggs was the technical guru at Wharfedale and his big thing was superb transient response. The large magnets and high flux that got him the superb transient response also got him a very low Qts figure and a lot of back EMF in the bass. So the Wharfedales from that era need a ported cabinet to come alive in the bass.

Look at the back side of the cones. You'll often see a number like 37 which is the free air resonance frequency and next to it a set of initials. Sometimes you'll see GAB for Briggs or rarely an RC for Raymond Cooke who left Wharfedale to found KEF.
