Sacriledge but .....

I'd hate to see you give up on those W70D's but if you must then here is another approach to the baffle problem. The W70's have a preety deep grill recess if I remember correctly. You could probably just cut out the old baffle leaving a 1 or 2 inch rim which you could attach a new baffle to.You would then have to make a thinner new grill from masonite or MDF. This would increase your internal volume slightly and possibly reduce baffle diffractions if the new baffle/grill were flush with the front cabinet edges.

I'd try new caps and those efficient tweeters from GR Research first though.
