I don't know about the wisdom of trying to use your cabinets. I have been running an 18sound horn for awhile now and feel it much better than a dome tweeter. They have turn-key plans on their website for a 2-way with a 12" woofer and horn tweeter.

Given the responses so far I'd say most here haven't heard the current offerings in a constant directivity waveguide. Try the hi-eff. speaker forum. A TAD or older altec/jbl can cross over as low as 500 hertz but most current day 1" exit compression drivers are closer to 1500 hertz.
