RE: Can anyone ID this Wharfedale speaker?

I just re-read your original post, and looked again at your picture. The grill cloth and finish certainly suggest that the speaker is from the '50s. Do you know what is inside? As you are probably aware, Wharfedale made some very special 10" and 12" full-rangers. These had beautifully cast frames and massive Alnico magnets. I recall that the flux density and frequency response specifications were embossed on a metal label attached to the back of the driver. Their high efficiency and smooth sound make these full- and wide-range Whafedales highly desired by connoisseurs with low-powered tube amps.

Wharfedale's W70 and W90 3-ways come up much more frequently on the auction sites, and seldom bring anywhere near what they are worth if measured by their sound quality, which is excellent. For this reason, I have often recommended them to people who are interested in getting their feet wet in vintage audio. A few years ago, I had a pair of W70s in my office side-by-side with a pair of 12" Tannoy HPDs in Cheviot cabinets. Both sounded great with my Fisher 400, the Tannoys winning by a narrow decision.
