The box design is that of the non D suffix series. The 40s would have been low down on the totem pole but, yes the design was not skewed in the bass region as so many speakers later were. The British were closer to the New England sound that believed in flat response. Bass is there but not over emphasized. They do rock well but are not the monitor speaker or west coast sound that so many associate with rock.
