I'd like to have had a chance to compare a set of W70s and W70Ds side by side but sadly the Ds were gone for some years before getting the W70s. I remember really liking the fried egg tweeter as it possessed great detail with little coloration. The crossover between the tweeter and midrange was almost seamless. Overall an excellent system. The older SuperTweeter from the W70 is not quite as extended but in-system is not quite as forward as what I remember the W70D. The result is that placement and presentation of something like the triangle in an orchestra seems more presented in position as it really is. The crossover to the mids is not quite as good as I reember the W70Ds to be but it may be the cap I used to get them running and I'll be replacing them at some point to see. The is noticed on critical listening and not when sitting back and simply listening to the music. The tweeter sound itself airy but, not thin and reminds me of the JansZen electrostatic tweeters I love. The tweeter in 1 incarnation or another was used by Biggs until fried egg tweeter and like Bozak showed that staying with and continuing improving a good driver design can be better than simply jumping from design to design. The same can be said of the midrange and woofer.
The bass of the W70D seemed more pronounced while with the W70, it was there and again well presented but just seems more balanced.
I think the Wxx series may have been a high mark in development from Biggs with the WxxD series being brought in to meet the newer higher power amps available and an effort to extend and try to emphasize the lower and higher end of the frequency spectrum that was starting to dominate the market from other designs. Biggs succeeded in doing this with the WxxD series without compromising the signature sound he developed.
I could live with either series and be happy. I think the Wxx is more sensitive to amp mating and especially that magic 1st watt.
