Re: 1970's Speakers For Vintage System

Allisons are quite good - designed by Roy Allison -- and there is an Allison user group called Aplus that can help you with maintenance questions etc.

Old Magnepans are very nice sounding too -- before they went to the ribbon tweeter they lacked some brilliance at the top but the overall sound was very sweet and if you are middle-aged like me you probably can't hear over 14khz if that. You will need a fairly powerful amp tho.

The LS3/5a mini-monitor came out in the mid-70s and set the standard for decades in the area of mid-range accuracy, detail and imaging, but prices on these have crept up above your range since they are collectable.

IMFs were good too -- another English speaker.

KLH Sixes are easy to come by and hold their own against Advents, I think. But the AR 3a is probably better if you can clean the pots.

The only Bozaks I have heard were excellent.

Really there were a lot of fine speakers -- the problem is you will have to buy a bunch and sell the ones you don't like. I hope you go with a tube amp, since that is an important part of the vintage sound.
