EICO HF-81: Worth getting manual off ebay

First, the switch is meant to be left TOWARD THE POWER TRANSFORMER in normal listening mode or in SEPERATE. If you move the switch to COMMON, you are tying the two amplifiers together internally in order to drive ONE speaker of a stereo pair. Channel 1 preamp tone control feeds the combined internal amplifiers. The preamp tone control channel 2 will feed out the channel 2 TAPE OUT jack to another EXTERNAL AMPLIFIER, hopefully, about the same rating (heh...). This is the only time you should select the COMBINED setting. The actual speaker connections and function setting are a whole other matter and I am already tired of typing!

I have known people to actually operate the beast with the combined setting totally unaware of the results, which is NOT lovely to say the least. I MUCH prefer the amp run in normal mode, not run in parallel. I have two EICO HF-81 and have tried to run them in monoblock fashion with mediocre results.

I really recommend getting a copy of the FULL manual off ebay from either an original sale or one of the places that does make digital copies. It is WELL WORTH the few ducats as it's one of the most comprehensive documents you can own, with step by step instructions for build.

This is perhaps one of the best amplifiers I know of and it STILL AMAZES ME after several hours of warmup. EVen compared to much higher priced brethren, the HF-81 can hold its own, outclassing brands and amps that would seem insurmountable. It renders much of the HIFI game obsolete.
