In my experience, bypassing the tone controls in the HF-81 may not yield favorable results. Obviously, YMMV. Alternatively, you can replace the PEC tone modules in the HF-81 with discrete components. The schematic is available on the interwebs which means you can roll your own on a perfboard or there is an AudioKarma member (Sam Cogley) that created a PCB which is available for sale. Last year, I used the PCB with excellent sonic benefits.
