Home Vintage Asylum

Classic gear from yesteryear; vintage audio standing the test of time.

speaking of which -- does the HF81 in question still have ceramic coupling caps?

If it does... lose 'em. :)

I know some consider this sacrilege, but, IME and IMO, replacing the horrible little ceramic coupling caps with pretty much anything halfway decent and modern yields a big sonic improvement for very little investment (of time or of $).

Heck, I put Orange Drops in mine when I rehabbed it long, long ago -- and it literally brought tears to my eyes (in a good way!) the first time I fired it up after spiffing it up a wee bit.

Oh, one other thought -- for whatever reason, the HF-81 (again, IMO) does not sound great with some loudspeakers that one might it expect it to work fairly well with. One example, in my own experience -- the Polk Audio Monitor Series Model 7A ("Monitor 7A"). The issue wasn't sensitivity per se ; the sound was just bright and kind of thin. Not nice.

YMMV, of course :-|
