Apparently, there was a rift at Eico between the engineers and the marketing department, (go figure) which resulted in the ST40 and 70 not sounding as good as they could.
This page goes into more detail and what to do about it. It seems to have disappeared from the internet proper, but you can still get to it via the Internet Archive...
I had an ST40 but I traded it for my 6BX7 amp...
