RE: ARC SP3A...N/T

Totally agree with the ARC SP3-A1. For a little less get the Frank Van Alstine SuperPas3x with buffers. Sound is quite similar with a nod towards the Van Alstine with its buffered output that seems less dependent on the amp, mine seemed almost immune to amp affects as to the sound. Mine had an early phono preamp that was not quite there but Frank addressed it in later units and offered to update mime at no charge. Sadly I never had it done. I suspect if I had, it might have gone head in every respect against the ARC.

If willing to reconsider ss, look at a db Systems preamp. They are still made and quite modular so you can start with a basic and upgrade as you have extra funds. Owners of these almost never get rid of them so finding abused one is rare. A new entry level setup I think is in your price range. I think if I were looking for a preamp today it would be the SuperPas3x if tune and the db Systems if ss. There are better bit you have to invest Michael more that for the same amount would generally yield a larger difference if invested somewhere in the system.
