Mike Samra'd Eico ST70

Here's my latest toy:

A Mike Samra modified Eico ST-70. First obvious mod is the conversion from 7591's to 6L6's. Transformers are big, so it was kind of a no brainer. It brought it from 35 wpc to about 50 wpc. A lot more headroom, more “oomph”! Also, the phono was converted to 12ax7s. This was a nice addition to the unit. Most of my playback is via LP, so it was a welcome addition. Underneath, most caps were replaced. Pots cleaned and a few higher end upgrades and she was done.

I did, and am, still tube rolling. Currently I'm using Amperex 12ax7s in the phono. I've also got an Amperex and 5751s in the pre. So, how does it sound? “Clarity” is the best way to describe it, with a solid punchy bass. You can hear every instrument, vocal timbre and nuance. Unbelievable! For the LP playback, I'm using a Garrard 301 with an SME 3009 and ADC XLM. Revox A77 for the tape, Eico ST97 for the tuner all playing through Klipsch Cornwalls. It's like rediscovering my music. Only upgrade left for me are some IC's. After that, I'm done. Happy and fulfilled.

Mike did a bang up job. I thought he was selling me a bill of goods, but he more than delivered! Best of all, Mike shared his vast knowledge and showed loads of patience for someone with little hands on experience such as myself. Hopefully Mike can chime in here and shed more light on the procedure.
