RE: Eico hf-85 or Conrad johnson pv-3 ?

I have the Eico HF85 and the CJ PV-2a. The Eico is infinitely simpler and has the option of using the tape out jacks to your amp, bypassing the tone controls.

I did a lot of work on my HF85 and it sounded great but not as good as the CJ. Both are old but the HF85 VERY old. The CJ has diodes and transistorized voltage regulation, lots more capacitors, more complicated and harder to trace circuits. The Eico is so easy to work on, but I had to put a new Alps volume pot in mine because of serious tracking imbalances in the original Vol pot. I had to disconnect the contour button but it was worthless anyway.

The phono section was surprisingly good in both. The Eico has a more vintage sound with the attendant noises and quirks.

Pete
