RE: Eico hf-85

FWIW I recently acquired a Scott 130 preamp. It is bone stock, and I do intend to restore it with new caps and anything else as necessary, but as is everything checks out pretty close to spec. After listening to it for a week I A-B'd with my modded Eico HF-85. I was astounded at the difference in sound (I was thinking the Scott sounded pretty good despite having lived with the Eico for 5 years or so), the 130 sounded downright awful in comparison. The Eico has beautiful transparency, detail and nuance that I probably hadn't realized until I had something to compare it to although it did replace my Marantz 7T with no regrets.

Obviously a more useful comparison will be made once I update the Scott, but it's at least fair to say that the HF-85 has the potential to sound very very good.
