After the input filter cap, not to mention the high DCR B+ winding, the rectifier tube can tolerate lots of capacitance. I definitely suggest beefing up the cap values. Instead of 20-40-40, you might like 20-100-100 uf, which will definitely increase bass impact and speed, without sacrificing sweetness.
I have long recommended this preamp as the ultimate sleeper. But, with the HF-81 getting hot-rodded and reviewed in Stereophile, the prices have shot up. By the way, do you remember the terrible looking waveforms in the Stereophile review ? Still, a month or two after, the price tripled ! The preamp stages of the HF-81 integrated are VERY close to the HF-85. It seems that the HF-85 has almost tripled in value, as well, so it no longer qualifies as the sleeper it was. I guess the sleeper term is now reserved for the Arkay SP-6 preamp, another obscure kit. ENJOY !!!
