First off, the HF12's if rewired as power amps-same as the HF14's do sound much better than an HF81!!
They have virtually the same output transformers and seperate power transformers. They don't have the extra AC heater draw of the extra preamp tubes in the HF81 and thus run cooler.
I have owned both and the seperate HF14 power amps are about the best sounding 14watt tube amps ever made!!
The HF81, requires a beefier transformer to survive due to the high AC voltage these days. Those amps were designed to run at 110VAC not 122-125VAC.
As far as the HF81, get a better power transformer.
Don't dick with the design of removing stages and bass and treble controls. It will no longer have the sweet sound. They knew what they were doing back in the 50's.
Don't waste your time on a choke for the power supply.Just rebuild the power supply with new caps and enjoy!!
Do increase the cathode resistor to about 250 ohms, it will keep the power tubes from running too hot.
