Re: Cap coupling vs. direct coupling on vintage SS receivers

Generally direct coupled amps have a DC designation meaning that they can amplify a direct current signal (like the crown amps with the DC designation)

Damping factor is related to the output impedence. The lower the impedence, the higher the damping factor. Solid state amps usually have very high damping factors and tube amps have lower damping facrors. What it means is that when the speaker sees the load a higher damping factor (lower impedence), the speaker's back emf (voltage generated by the voice coil/magnet acting as a generator) will be damped(shorted) resulting in better control of the speaker's tendency to continue to resonate. You can sometimes demonstraye this by gently pushing on a woofer that is disconected and then comparing the forces when it has the input shorted.(be VERY carefull if you try this!}
