The quality, stability, and reliability, of some modern active and passive parts has gone way up.R's and Caps and L's can be found for sensible money. And, some Audio quaity components are worth the $$$$$.
Some IC's (evel VLSIC's and power amp IC's, ARE excellent - but sticking to Mfrs app'n notes only is not always the path to audio's HE.
Rebuilt classic audio using good to very good standard parts is worth ever penny, IME&O, see my system.

however - effort and thought, over time = learning / knowledge, specific to you and yr room / set-up, are at least as important.
- if ANY path in audio is to be consistently satisfying musically, or any other jolly.
