Took a Celestion G10T-75CE driver to Skip's Music recently for reconing. Got to q & a the repair tech about modern vs. vintage. He said that electronics proper, amps, stomp boxes, digital delays et al, are about as good as they get in the instrumental realm. He considered consumer electronic components a bit more disposable in construction. In his estimation, though, the biggest advances have been in speaker technology & its' ability to deliver more power with greater clarity. He felt a lot of good modern hi-fi drivers are neutered by complex crossover units. Reconing vintage drivers, be they hi-fi or instrumental, updates their retro tone with modern structural integrity. He also informed me that Celestion now outsources driver construction from their Ipswich headquarters to the Far East. Thus his choice for best drivers currently available are J.B.L.s, expensive but worth it, & Kentucky's Eminence, with their ability to replicate any tone ever created! These really are the best days to roll your own speaker system, especially reloading classic hi-fi & instrumental cabs. If it aint vintage, why settle for someone else's contemporary compromise?
