Classic gear from yesteryear; vintage audio standing the test of time.

Oddly enough, a reccomendation of something NOT to get...

Gosh, my ears are still hurting after a brief listening session. I'm talking about the AR TSW 110... Yes, Acoustic Research, from the later Teledyne period with the titanium coated tweeters. Boy I can see how metal dome tweeters got the reputation of being harsh and strident. These are all that and more... And talk about lack of bass, I'm gonna have to take the woofers out and check the phase again, but I thought I put them back correctly after I refoamed them. I don't know about the larger speakers in the TSW series but I think they all used the same tweeter. I think you'll need a whip and a chair to tame them. BTW, I have been comparing them to some similar sized speakers; a pair of Bose (*Gulp!*) 201's and and a pair of Celestion Ditton 110's. The Bose have a surpising amount of treble from a cheap looking cone tweeter and plenty of bass. Midrange is kind of recessed and imaging is odd no doubt due to the direct/refecting configuration. The Celestion Ditton 110's are the winner; sweet midrange, smooth and airy treble, less bass than the Bose but enough for a 6.5" woofer in a small cabinet. And good imaging. The AR's do image well, and can be made to "disappear" in the room, but that harsh treble...make it stop!
The associated equipment---Marantz 1060 amp, Philips CD player, Nakamichi BX300 Cassette deck, Toshiba belt-drive turntable.
So- anyone else know of something we should avoid on our quest?
