Usually, the L-pads on the back are done for with age. Actually, I have a pair of 2AXs here in the living room with Larger Advent woofers on them and the L-pads gutted and bypassed.
Back in the day, people said the best way to listen to them was with the L-pads all the way up. So gutting them is similar.
If you find out afterwards that you need tweeters, all the suggestions so far on this thread are accurate.
