The problem is not average loudness. An 85 dB speaker only needs a few watts at 2 meters distance to play that loudly(a very high average level). The problem is peaks on dynamic sound where you can suddenly ad 20 dB or more for a split second and now you need a few hundred watts for that period. Fidelity goes down, especially if it takes time for the amp to become stable again. And you do risk damaging a speaker, especially a tweeter if the amp goes into bad clipping which will put full power into all the drivers.
