Hi,
I had previously seen many positive comments about the Dynaco ST-35. Often referred to as the "Baby Dynaco". I love tubes and vintage speakers, so I managed to acquire this amp. I swapped out the coupling caps for Rel Caps, added some better quality connectors. Mullard NOS 7247, and Mullard re-issue EL84's. I have to say it sounds extremely good with a pair of Fried Beta monitors, (that I had been previously using as computer audio), I added some cheap Yamaha servo-subs, crossed over at 50 hz., 24 db/oct. active crossover. Warm, 3 dimensional, and just really fun to listen to in my small room. I listen mainly to vinyl.
Although the 30+ yr. old ,Fried Betas sound great, I have an insistent urge to upgrade to some better speakers to see if it can get even better.
I readily admit to suffering from Audiophilia Nervosa, or "Upgradeitis.
18 watts per channel will require monitors that are fairly efficient. I do not know the efficiency of the Fried, but they play as loud and clean as I want, without strain, in my 20' by 10', by 8' high room, with this amplifier. I listen to classic rock, but not Metal, head thumpin rock.
I have been reading online reviews of Proac Response 2, D2, or Studio 118, and speakers of similar quality. Proac seem to embody all that I appreciate in a speaker system. The ability to "disappear", wide and deep soundstage, the sense of real instruments and voices in the room, etc. I have a budget of about $2500 or so in the used market. I have tried horns with other low powered tube amps, Klipsch Lascalas. I was not really happy with them in the long run. Also, my room is too small to really get the most out of large speakers.
Would be very interested if anyone here has used this amp,(or similar low powered el84 amp), and found a great set of speakers to use with it that made them happy.
Any opinions warmly welcomed.
