RE: Creating vintage sounding speaker using modern elements, Which tweeter to use ?

Finding a suitable 12" that's still in production is going to be a real challange. Going back in time, there were a couple of suitable woofers. The JBL 123 that was used in the L100 works quite well in a 2 way. It's efficient; but not so high as to be difficult to match. JBL crossed it over at 2500 Hz to a 5" midrange with just an L-pad and a series capacitor. The SEAS 27TBFC/G that Briggs suggested would be perfect with that woofer. JBL used it in the L88 as a 2 way version with the 1 3/4" cone tweeter.

I have two pair of the 27TBFC/G in use. One pair is crossing over to Advent woofers at 1500 Hz with just a 12 uF cap and an L-pad. The other pair crossover at 2 kHz to SEAS 10" woofers, the 25F-EW. Both pair of speakers were intended to be modernized versions of the Dynaco A25XL, and so quite "vintage" sounding. There is also a soft dome version of that tweeter, the 27TDFC which is very slightly more sensitive.

I agree with Airtime on the new SEAS 10". I don't know of any 12" that rolls off naturally, and smoothly, at 1500-2000 Hz. Most show a lot of breakup and cone resonances before thay roll off and require a high order crossover to suppress the resonances. To get a natural and smooth rolloff requires a cone that has internal damping in its structure to prevent the resonances from becoming audible - that just isn't the way modern woofers are designed; and in my opinion, it's one of the reasons the vintage models sounded different.

Tweeters on the other hand, are a different animal, and there really were not many (if any) good tweeters in the 60's, and especially none that could reach down to a first order crossover at 1500 Hz. The Advent tweeter was probably closest, as it crossed at 1 kHz. The New Advent tweeter from 1978 was even better, and did use a first order filter; but crossed at 1500 Hz. The two SEAS tweeters mentioned above are much smoother and as a result, image better.
