If it's got to be bookshelf speakers, get the Celestions! You will not be sorry. I've seen them go on ebay in your price range and although they're not as extended in the bass as Advents or the JBL 100, they image much better, are more detailed, and more satisfyingly convey the illusion of live performance. Stands are a must to get the best out of them, but that would apply to any true bookshelf size speaker. Any other bookshelf speakers in the same league or better are likely more expensive (i.e., Proac, AE, Celestion SL-600). The Rogers/Spendor LS-3/5a usually sell for more, but I like the Celestions better. For less money you could also consider ADS speakers, however, these are older (like the Advents and JBL's) and may be harder to find in good condition and are not as good as the Celestion SL-6Si.
