How do you tame a Celestion ribbon tweeter?

I have a pair of Celestion 5000s which I bought on ebay. These came out around 1990 and use a seven inch midwoofer and a long ribbon tweeter. They cost about $2200 in their day so they were high end speakers. When I listen to them I am really impressed by the solid bass and speed and clarity of the midrange and highs, but like John Atkinson in his review (still viewable on the Sphile website)I noticed that the mid treble comes on too strong while the range above 10khz is actually diminished. The latter is less of a problem. But if only I could tame the aggressiveness on trumpets etc. I would have a really listenable speaker. As it is, the speakers are spectacular but fatiguing. I tried using a conrad-johnson tube preamp with a Quad 405 to smooth things out but they still sound too harsh when the brass get going. I have a cj mv-50 tube poweramp that needs some new tubes. Maybe that would help. Or - dare I say it- an equalizer? Or is it possible they are not performing correctly?

Thanks for any suggestions!
