Re: Small inexpensive speakers for college dorm........

Almost within your size range - Klipsch Heresy. While not a great lover of these, I think they will shine in a dorm room for 1 simple reason, if no other. When you need to play them low, they do not get muddy and lose detail. You have an environment where low output capability is almost more important than higher level output. Most AS speakers do not have the ability to deliver the detail at low SPL hence are more preferable at higher levels but, neighbors in a dorm may not be happy.

For AS speakers, I'd suggest the A/D/S L300 that does well losing some but not as badly as most in the low level. Another idea would be a double set of Radio Shack Minimus 7s in a stacked array. I use a single set at the office and have to keep levels low and they are pretty decent provided I keep my expectations in perspective. I have had them in a double array and like a double set of Advents are better than the sum of their parts. Look for the earlier sets that are AS boxes and preferably the same model #s so the drivers are the same. I found both of mine had a similar problem and that was the screws holding the drivers in had backed off and after tightening they sounded lots better. Also, the screws on the drivers likewise had backed off.
