Henry,
After you get the kinks out, you can think about stereo. ;> ) Tap into the FM detector's O/P before the de-emphasis network. MASTER DIYer Steve Bench has provided us with a nice MPX adapter design. Yes, it's IC based, but considering the "pedigree" I don't think there will be any sonic issues.
