Ahhh...
Ford Falcon's and Holden Commodores...I'm a Holden man myself, well, Chev actually...
I've got that old Nova, which is rather uncomfortably similar in genetics to the current Commodore!
I also run old beaters, I hate all the excess electrical gimmickry that new cars have, just like all the idiot lights & buttons on those crummy remote-controlled surround-swill deceivers...
I ran the numbers, and my fleet manager says I can run five beaters for the price of a new Cavalier...so I do!
As for converting to different fuel, you may be right about LPG (it's a non-starter in Canada, too) vs. CNG. But does LPG behave like Propane at low temperatures? I've heard stories of folks who've lost all their fuel savings in seconds! Start the motor in sub-zero weather, and too much unburned propane makes it into the exhaust system, then suddenly detonates! Not that I'd heard of people getting burned to death, but one 'bloke I spoke to said his entire exhaust system ripped right in half, from the exhaust manifold right back to the tailpipe! Then there is the uneconomical cost of conversion...in our worthless currency, that would be about $4000 to go dual-fuel (about $2500ish in USD). I can buy a Suzuki Forsa for $12K that gets 58mpg, or for a mere $26K, I can get some even-smaller crap Honda thing called an Insight that gets 88mpg. I figure that if I drove 10 billion miles a year, I might get that $14K back by the year 2525...
Hey, why not convert a valve amp to take high-voltage MOS-FET's OR Valves at the flick of a switch, for those times when you don't want to listen critically and waste valve life as a consequence...
Hardly worth the cost of admission there either, would it? I mean, if it saved you $200 worth of valves in 5 or 10 years, but cost you $2000 to do the conversion...well, given how long these old valves amp last, it may indeed pay for itself down the road. Your grandchildren's grandchildren's grandchildren may eventually reap the benefits...
As for Leak gear being popular in Oz, that makes sense. They sent all the rejected people & undesireables and criminals to colonize that big sandbox, so why not throw the matching Die-Fi equipment at them, too?
Cheers!
