Banning,I think we should keep the status quo. First, I'm not sure there are enough of the serious collectors of "real" vintage equipment to keep the discussions moving ahead and lively. Go visit AA's Shutterbug Strasse. About 4 guys beating the same three subjects into the ground and posts quite infrequent. Second, this year's Thrift Shop denizen is likely to become next year's serious vintage collector as he learns more and gets ahead on the bills. Everyone has to start their hobby somewhere, and most of us cannot jump in on the top rung.
I see a relationship between the extremes, and I see it as more of a continuity of interest not as an Us and Them issue.
Sorry, I respect your viewpoint, and have entertained similar thoughts, but on balance I'd have to vote to leave it alone.
