You're probably right about the speaker match. Speakers are "voiced" to sound right with certain types of amps. Since the AR-3 you mentioned was from the 50's and 60's, it was certainly going to be used with tube amps, and was definitely tweaked by the folks at A-R to sound right with tube amps of the day. A-R used many Dyna amps in their demos so it's not surprising they would sound good with the AR-3's. Matched up with speakers from the solid state era, you would not have speakers "voiced" to sound right with tubes, and might blame the amp. Lots of folks blamed the SS amps in the late 60's and early 70's when they didn't sound good with tube era speakers.I had lots of Dyna equipment back in the late 60's and early 70's and given properly matched speakers, there was nothing missing in the highs.
There is a general tendency here in AA to blame specific components rather than see it as a poor matchup of otherwise good components. But most often, that's the case.
