RE: Small(er) Advent

To me, the requirements for the Smaller Advent are
1. smaller room
2. 70s solid state not tube receiver, 20-40 true RMS wattage
3. No double pairs

The smaller Advent really requires a solid-state receiver that is at ease running 4-ohm loads. To, me, the classic pairing is with the Sherwood 7100A.

These listed at 69.95 ea new in their prime
Remember, these were intended to build a quality Hi Fi system with $140 for the speakers, $200 for the receiver (the $199.95 Sherwood 7100A), and no more than $100 for the turntable (ARxa or Garrard changer) which keeps the total cost to under $500 including sales tax in early 70s dollars.

The EPI 100, which sold for just $10 more at $79.95 is a little higher impedence, but they are not true 8 ohm speakers eith, and I do not recommend doubling up those either. You could get a good argument between budget audiophiles as to which of the two was the better budget speakers. The market ultimately said the EPI was, even though they did not go quite as far down.

This slightly under $500 system I described marked the dividing line between serious if budget audiophile vs. mass market. I suppose you COULD go Marantz 2215 or Pioneer SX-525, but I have always thought of the Sherwood as the truly classic pairing for the smaller ADvent.
